I've started using My Plate at Live Strong to track my eating and I LOVE it. It makes it so easy to keep track of everything, especially since there's an app for it so I can use my iPod to record what I eat when I'm not at my computer. :)

Facebook

So… Facebook.  I really, really, really hate Facebook, but it seems like everyone is using it.  I have a FB account, but I almost never update it.  Is FB necessary for designers?  Are blogs becoming somewhat obsolete/redundant because of it?  Do I need to get over my FB aversion and embrace it?

Do you like FB?  Could you please tell me how I can love it, too?  LOL

Hate it, never use it, don’t know anyone who does…

I don’t want to get into Facebook either. I like blogs, but now it seems all designers are doing either Facebook or Twitter too. It’s just too much for me. Maybe Facebook is easier to use than a blog?? I could understand that. But it seems like it’s more of the everybody-else-does-it-therefore-i-must-do-it-too thing. Honestly, if designers drop their blogs, they will probably also drop me as a customer.

  • Jen Graham says:

I use it all the time. I have a fan page for my design account…. I give away coupons on there and interact with customers and fans that way. I try to keep my personal FB just to friends, family, CT members and other designers.
It is a FANTASTIC way to network and see what everyone else is doing. So yes, you need to get over your aversion. :) Start a fan page. I will be your first fan. Blogs are still important, but EVERYONE is on Facebook.

I’ve had a facebook account for a while, and I have a lot of fan pages but it isn’t the first place I go when I’m looking for info on what a designer has out that is new. I almost never catch any of the promo freebies (especially coupons) people give out there because I’m not on it constantly so I really kind of hate those promos. I’m sure it works for some people, but I’m not one of them. I still read lots of blogs ;)

  • We have a fan page for our design name/blog…as another tool for advertising and special coupons, freebies etc. I agree with Jen that blogs are still important too as not everyone has facebook but my blog is first then my fan page…..

First there were the blogs, then the newsletters and you had to sign up for both in order not to miss anything. Then came not only Facebook, but also Twitter. I hate to say, but I wish it could go back to just blogs. Google Reader is so handy and I don’t like that I sometimes see the same content four times the way it has evolved for many designers. (And I dislike Twitter as much as you dislike Facebook.) That said, see you on Facebook. ;)

I am with you Ellie – I don’t need another place to go to, to find out what the world is doing NOW! I am just too busy. I love the blogs and visit regularly. I guess I may be one of those old far%s that can’t keep up with the new fangled techno gadgets. Do you really need a phone that you can change from landscape to portrait with a turn of the wrist? WHAT FOR? Do we really NEED this feature on a phone? And they cost tons of money each month after you pay big bucks for them! I don’t understand how everyone is falling for all this techno advertising. What ever happened to what do you need – not what do you want??
I will stop now – sorry! Hugs, Nancy P

I know I am supposed to be talking you into Facebook! But I really really love the blogs waaaay more!

  • Larissa says:

You can make it so that your blog updates to your Facebook fan page… Then people who like Facebook and never view blogs will still get to see it. I never go to blogs. I get yours from the email because I know that I won’t randomly go on my own. I spend lots of time on Facebook. It really is not difficult once you get used to it and I think it is FAR easier for people to go back through your albums that have pictures of all of your designs. There are definitely bonuses for blogging, but there is really no reason you can’t do both at least a little bit. I hate to break it to you, but Facebook really is the thing right now. I see ads for scrapbooking supplies on the sides ALL the time.

  • Larissa says:

Oh, and I meant to tell you… you know your kit “She Dreams” that was made for my little Cassiopeia whenever I was going to have her… several years ago… LOL… well… I am finally pregnant with her! I will email you the title page I made. ;-)

I can’t stand facebook… to much of a time waster. Had a facebook account for one week and deleted it. I love blogs!

  • bunnyfreak says:

I feel your pain – I hate it to. I only have an account to see photos of family. I much prefer blogs or twitter.

  • momsthewordus says:

I get your blog posts via email, and I responded to the email before I remembered I should comment here instead!

I love blogs. I am a strong Facebook resister! I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ve noticed that more and more design sites are using facebook and twitter for their games and deals. I miss out on those, but I still don’t want to join Facebook! I hope blogs don’t become obsolete. I love, love, love blogging!

  • Ellie says:

Thanks, guys! I really love blogs, too, and will keep on blogging no matter what. Partly because I love blogging and partly because I now know that there are several people out there who don’t visit FB at all. I don’t want to leave you folks out!

However, Jennifer Graham convinced me to start a fan page. I’ll do that to keep in touch with the FB people, but I’ll still post on my blog like usual.

I’m NOT a social person at all (I love people, but am awkward and stupid around anyone I don’t know well, lol), so all of this social networking that has become so popular is something of a nightmare for me.

I am very glad to say that I am not on those bandwagons, nor am I going to be. All these get from my blog, but sign up for newsletter for something else, and NOW Face book and Twitter. No thanks, count me out! Blogs and newsletters are great. So easy to keep track of. Nothing old fashioned about it, just don’t have the time to hop from place to place to sign up for something that I won’t be using for any other time. That would be like driving out of the way just to save a buck. Stay here, PLEASE!!!

As a scrapper I enjoy having fan pages for my favorite designers, sometimes I miss a blog on my RSS feed, and most have their Fan page update when they have a blog or new releases.
I also like that designers can RAK their fans and keep in contact that way.
I think blogs aren’t obsolete, it’s just another method for brand recognition.

I say if you’re okay with it, do it. If you’re not, I honestly don’t think it’ll hurt you too much Ellie. You’re pretty well known ;)

I love my FB account.. and visit daily. Honestly I can see the designers taking advantage of it for ppl that don’t want to blog hop to get news each day. Let me tell you that the NewsFeed makes it very convenient for ppl to get the designers headlines and status msgs very quickly in the feed. Then if they want to pop over to that page .. they can. Zip.. zip.. quick.

Now with that being said.. I love to stroll my fav blogs each night.. so either.. or .. is fine by me! :) Good luck with your decision.

  • Ellies Stalker says:

FB or Twitter will never replace Blogs there just a good advertising tool to get your work seen by other people by linking your blog to your fb or twit page and a lot don’t want to be fan blogs and have there emails cluttered with notices so these have become great tools people can become fans of see up-to-date information and then run to the blogs to whore over there Fav designer but there never going to make blogs obsolete

  • SandyPie says:

I think I agree with Tiffany, she said what I tried to say yesterday but could form the appropriate words for. I like my Facebook for keeping up with friends and family.

  • kait says:

I don’t care for FB. I have tried it and it just doesn’t do it for me.

  • Kelseyll says:

I’m with you on FB. Tried it, don’t really like it and I’m never on it now. I prefer to sign up on a blog to have newsletters sent to my email to alert me of what you are up to and what you are releasing that week! =) Which reminds me I should re-sign up for your newsletter since you are back! =) YAY!!

  • Dawn says:

    Blog blog blog please!!!

  • Janice says:

Set this up for your facebook fan page/ blog feed and they you can just keep blogging. http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/networkedblogs Actually facebook is announcing something today that will make it easier for people to share things from their websites all over facebook. Good luck. Love your designs!
